The Future of IoT: Drones

What are drones –

An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) or commonly known as a Drone, is an aircraft without a human pilot aboard. Drones are a component of an unmanned aircraft system (UAS); which include a UAV, a ground-based controller, and a system of communications between the two.

The new kind –

Earlier, drones were generally used for 2 purposes – Hobby and Specialised use.

Hobby Drones were open source, produced on a mass basis and were relatively cheap. Specialized drones were proprietary to usage, custom made and were expensive based on the usage.

In recent times, there has emerged a new usage pattern which is overcoming the earlier 2 usage.

These are for commercial applications. Essentially a cloud device, these are highly extensible thereby providing a higher ROI compared to others.

Commercial Applications –

While they originated mostly in military applications, their use is rapidly expanding to commercial, scientific, recreational, agricultural, policing, peacekeeping, surveillance, product deliveries, aerial photography, agriculture and drone racing.

Drone use cases

Civilian UAVs now vastly outnumber military UAVs, with estimates of over a million sold by 2015, so they can be seen as an early commercial application of autonomous things, to be followed by the autonomous car and home robots.
